I've had some nice comic relief on the commuter train, taking Metro North into NY City in the morning. Normally, the morning train is filled with people busy reading the paper, doing work or catching a little extra sleep. It's kind of a somber group.

There's one conductor who often goes off-script when he makes the announcement as the train pulls into Grand Central. He adds a personal touch, wishing us a great day and sometimes a comment that's weather-related, seasonal or keyed to something in the news -- like if the Yankees beat Boston the night before.

It changes the whole demeanor of the crowd on the train, and they leave with a smile, often talking to each other. It's a nice way to start the workday, and it makes you feel there's a human side to the railroad.
