Greetings Jalal,

Are you coming back anytime soon? It will be interesting to see what happens with real estate after the 2008 games. The prices of real estate have almost tripled since 2003. Growth at this rate has consequences! Some speculate a mild recession after the games. Currently, inflation has become an issue that the government hopes to control.

Hi Gianandrea,
Actually this post was written by my friend Jalal. However I hear your concerns. As a manufacturing center for the world in a very competitive market, it seems that with the rush to be visible and viable...ethical concerns are just thrown out the window. In a macro-production sense, building a base product first and then later changing/modifying to meet foreign requirements is a reasonable thing to do. But changes can cost time & more money, something no importer likes...but they can't have the best of both worlds.

Ultimately, whether commoditized or customized...the responsibility for appropriately bringing a product to market lies with both producer and importer; my personal preference is for placing responsibility on the importer and associated transactional agents.

Mario, I recently turn to think about China as a real danger for the world. The feeling I have is if a country where first rule is not to have rules. The furious way they approached the market, the fact that most of the products are not in compliance with the EC rules, the fact that they skin alive animal to make fur, etc., all the above make me think that, without a strong warning from the western markets we will face serious problems. Your post comes as a surprise to me, because the picture is slightly different. But do we have to believe at it? Or it could be a surface picture for western businessmen travelling there?

Jalal:

Good job in drawing a comprehensive picture of a complex economy that overlays a complicated history. For those wishing to delve further into the topic, I recommend "One Billion Customers" by James McGregor of Dow Jones who now works with Ogilvy & Mather, I believe the first agency to really become established in the Chinese market.

I also have one expert I rely on who helps US companies do business in China. My most recent post about his expertise deal with piracy http://www.conversationagent.com/2007/05/piracy_an_inter.html

Finally, I also wrote about how there is a new creative class in China based upon a Fast Company story here http://www.conversationagent.com/2007/05/going_from_clas.html

In order to accelerate and sustain its economic growth, the Chinese government investing heavily in infrastructure projects; hundreds of Billions of Dollars have been poured in projects, covering farming, forestation, fisheries, energy, transportation, postal and telecom services and other public services., this has brought convenience to the daily life of Chinese people and serves as a primary example of the positive changes in China's primary Industries.
In stark contrast with the poor transportation infrastructure of the past, China now has a modern, comprehensive transportation network which reaches in all directions by rail, road, highways, marine and airlines.
